Fusing Questions
What is Glass Fusing?Glass Fusing is a technique of assembling cold glass together then firing in a kiln at a temperature high enough to melt them together into one piece of glass.
What is COE or Coefficient of Expansion? When glass is heated and cooled it expands and contracts. Tested Compatible glass has been tested by the manufacturer to expand and contract at the same pace and the same temperature. This glass is assigned a number representing the expansion of glass per degree. When fusing glass, you should not combine numbers that do not match (no COE 90 with COE 96). You also should not use glass that has not been tested compatible like your stained glass scraps.
What is Dichroic Glass?Dichroic glass is glass that has been coated with one or more layers of metal oxides designed to enhance reflections of light. The reflections of light appear different colors at varying angles. The process of adding dichroic coating to glass is done in a vacuum chamber at elevated temperatures. This process is expensive and time consuming, so dichroic glass is more expensive than regular glass.
